An Earlier Master

AN EARLIER MASTER

Worshipful Brother Bill Dommett was born in BrisbaneĀ  in 1940, the first of four children of Jack and Norma Dommett, and grew up in the suburb of Windsor. From age nine to early adulthood, he was involved in the Scouting Assoc, where he met his future wife Val (nee Doughty), a Lady Cubmaster.

Since completing a Science Degree at the University of Qld. in 1960, Bill worked in food science laboratories of the Qld Dept of Primary Industries. Bill started work in the Brisbane CBD in 1961. He and Val married in 1963, and soon after they were transferred for eight years to Toowoomba, where both of their children, Lorraine and David were born. Since the transfer back to Brisbane, Bill worked at Hamilton. Unfortunately Val died of cancer in 1996. There are now four grandchildren, two in Brisbane and two in Ohio, USA. Bill retired in 2004 (to wood carving, bowls, golf and the grandchildren, etc).

While in Toowoomba, Bill joined Gowrie Lodge in 1965 and joined Harmony Royal Arch Chapter (RAC) the next year. Bill and Val also both joined the Darling Downs Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. By the time the family returned to Brisbane in 1972, Bill was still one of the six Stewards in Gowrie Lodge but was Excellent Third Principal in Harmony RAC.

Back in Brisbane, Bill first affiliated with Lutwyche RA Chap where he eventually went through all the Principal chairs and appendant degree chairs, and has since been Treasurer for several years, receiving honorary Grand RAC rank along the way. Later he affiliated with Thistle Lodge, progressing through all the offices until he became the Wor. Master, and now he is the lodge Secretary.

Since retirement, Bill joined another five masonic orders (each of which meets only quarterly) – Heritage Rose Croix Chap., Alpha Preceptory of Knights Templar, Thornton Memorial Conclave of Red Cross of Constantine, David Conclave of Secret Monitors and Sandgate 30th Sovereign Council.
